What’s in a Name?
Your restaurant’s name is the frame for its concept. It offers an identity and an image that can often attract customers and increase sales. The name effectively becomes your brand, which will be expressed throughout the establishment – from the logo to dining room decor to your server’s uniforms. A great name should not only reflect the food and service that you offer but also set you apart from the competition.
For example, consider Burgatory, a Pennsylvania-based chain that serves burgers, milkshakes and other fare. The name is a play on the Christian concept of purgatory, which is a place where sinners go to be “purified” before entering heaven. This name is clever and memorable. It is also carried out throughout its branding, including a logo that features a red “B” with flames at the bottom and a halo on top. They also use mini pitchforks to hold their burgers together, and fun plays on the concepts of heaven and hell throughout the restaurant.
Burgatory offers a great example of the power of a name. It’s easy to pronounce, memorable and creates nearly endless marketing and branding opportunities. It also tells you exactly what to expect: this is a burger joint.
There are some things that everyone should consider when picking a restaurant name. First, the name should be distinct. If there is another Christos’ within a 25 or so mile radius of your restaurant, you should probably avoid that name. Second, the name should reflect both your cuisine and the type of service. For example, you shouldn’t use the word “taverna” in your name unless you’re a smaller restaurant that serves Greek food.
Third, you should think carefully about the restaurant name and associated concept before committing to anything. Rebranding can be expensive and can confuse customers. Fourth, you should try to visualize the restaurant’s name before making a final decision. Not only can this help you avoid a rebrand, but it will also help you think about how the name will translate into a logo, slogan, and other branding efforts like the decor.
Finally, make sure that whatever name you choose should be catchy and attractive to customers. For example, you may be tempted to write your restaurant’s name using the Greek alphabet or to name your restaurant after the small village where your grandparents were born. While these names may be meaningful to you, they may be confusing or hard to pronounce for patrons. If your customers don’t actually know what your restaurant is called, then you may have a more difficult time bringing in a crowd.
Choosing the perfect name for a Greek restaurant can be challenging. If you find yourself getting stuck, consider our list of more than 200 creative restaurant names. These ideas may boost your brainstorming session – and help you choose a name that is right for your business.
