What Is Little Caesars?

Little Caesars is an American pizza chain. It has franchises throughout the United States, along with Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, Canada, and the Caribbean. By total sales volume, it is the third-largest pizza chain in the United States, behind Pizza Hut and Domino’s. Little Caesars actually started out as “Little Caesar’s Pizza Treat” when it was founded just outside of Detroit in 1959.  Its first franchise opened just a few years later in 1962, and also carried the same name. Today, Little Caesars has more than 5,400 locations across the globe.

In 1962, Little Caesars used its logo – a cartoon drawing of Julius Caesar holding a spear with a pizza on it – for signage, making it into a 3D figure. The company carried its branding through to its commercials, with the cartoon Caesar saying the catchphrase “Pizza! Pizza!” to advertise that Little Caesars sells two pizzas for the price of one pizza from a competition. This catchphrase was introduced in 1979 and still is used today.

Initially, the “Pizza! Pizza!” deal was served in a memorable custom pizza box that was a long rectangle. Later, the company introduced a pan pizza and added a new catchphrase: “Pan! Pan!” Ultimately, Little Caesars got rid of the long pizza box in favor of a standard box that was easier for both its customers and its employees to handle.

Little Caesars has evolved throughout the years, including updating its logo for a less cartoonish version of Julius Caesar. It also introduced a “hot-n-ready” pizza for just $5, which shifted the chain’s focus to more carryout instead of delivery. The company was also one of the first pizza chains to use a speed-cooking conveyor oven, known as the Rotary Air Impingement Oven. This allowed Little Caesars to get pizzas cooked and out to hungry customers much more quickly.

The company also has never shied away from innovating with its menu. This includes items like “Deep! Deep!” Dish Pizza (Detroit-style pizza), wings, crazy bread, cheese bread, salads, stuffed crazy bread, and pizza with meatless sausage. It also has a number of limited-time offers, like a soft pretzel crust pizza.

The company’s owners, the Ilitch family, are among the richest people in the United States due to the success of the brand. Co-founder Mike Ilitch owned both the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Tigers. Marian Ilitch is one of the richest women in the world.

From 2008 to 2015, Little Caesars was the fastest-growing pizza chain in the United States. This growth was fueled in part by its partnership with Kmart stores, putting pizza shops directly inside of these big box stores. When Kmart went bankrupt, these locations closed – but Little Caesars continued to grow. It has shops in:

  • The United States
  • Canada
  • Honduras
  • Nicaragua
  • Costa Rica
  • Dominican Republic
  • Mexico
  • Colombia
  • Panama
  • Peru
  • Guatemala

  • Jamaica
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Chile
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Turkey
  • Bahrain
  • Spain
  • The United Kingdom
  • Singapore
  • The Philippines
  • India

Significantly, Little Caesars has remained consistent with its branding throughout its history and across the globe. This has helped to build the company into an instantly recognizable chain, both from its logo, its slogan, and its brand colors.

Want to Increase Your Brand’s Profile? We Can Help

Little Caesars is a good example of how a good idea and excellent branding can result in major success. While most people don’t start a restaurant with the goal of growing a pizza empire, you can increase sales through effective marketing. One easy place to start: using custom-branded disposable items.Budget Branders works with independently owned and operated food service businesses throughout the United States, from pizza joints to food trucks to cafes and coffee shops. We know that our clients typically don’t have the extra cash (or storage space!) to order millions of promotional items at once. That’s why we sell all of our disposable products – including custom paper bags, custom napkins, and custom foil bags – in smaller quantities and at fair prices.
