The Chick-fil-A Story
Based on this discovery, Cathy decided to pivot to selling fried chicken sandwiches. He registered the name Chick-fil-A and quickly began to license his chicken sandwich. In just a few short years, Cathy had licensed the sandwich to more than 50 restaurants. However, when Cathy opened the first dedicated Chick-fil-A location in 1967, his chicken sandwich was no longer sold at other establishments.
Despite Chick-fil-A’s slogan – “We Didn’t Invent the Chicken, Just the Chicken Sandwich” – Cathy did not invent chicken sandwiches. It was the first national chain to make a fast fried chicken sandwich, however. It also became incredibly popular as the franchise spread throughout the United States. Chick-fil-A sandwiches are marinated in pickle juice and served on a toasted, buttery bun.
One of the core principles that drives Chick-fil-A is its focus on a small menu and customer service. While many fast food restaurants offer fried chicken sandwiches, Chick-fil-A doesn’t sell burgers and other sandwiches. By keeping its menu relatively small, the restaurant can focus on quality – with the “A” in its name said to represent “grade A top quality.”
Today, Chick-fil-A operates 3,059 restaurants in 48 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and also provides catering services. Chick-fil-A grosses more in sales per restaurant than any other fast food chain and is behind only McDonald’s in terms of total fast food sales. It also sells its dipping sauces in grocery stores nationwide.
Chick-fil-A has some unique aspects that make it stand out from its competitors. For example, workers are trained to say “my pleasure” instead of “you’re welcome” when a guest thanks them. All restaurants are also closed on Sundays, in accordance with founder Cathy’s Christian beliefs.
Truett Cathy was a devout Southern Baptist, and his faith had an influence on Chick-fil-A. In particular, Chick-fil-A has drawn criticism for its donations to anti-LGBTQ causes and public statements against same-sex marriage by its executives. While Chick-fil-A has backed away from these stances, many people still refuse to patronize the restaurant or to eat what has become known as “hate chicken.”
Despite this controversy, Chick-fil-A remains incredibly popular. Its slogan “Eat Mor Chikin,” a phrase promoted by Holstein dairy cows, has been a long-running advertisement that many Americans immediately recognize. In fact, Chick-fil-A is in such high demand that the lines at its restaurants have caused major traffic issues in states across the country.
