If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, chances are good that you’ll stop at a local Subway. Since the 1960s, this submarine chain has served up a range of sandwiches to fit almost any palate. Today, it has grown into one of the largest restaurant chains in the world.Subway’s menu has changed over the years, but it remains focused on sandwiches. Its marketing emphasizes how these subs are made with freshly baked bread and other fresh ingredients – like plenty of veggies as add-on options. The Subway menu includes sandwiches, wraps, salads, bowls, and even pizza.

Although Subway has endured some hard times in terms of publicity, it has endured in large part due to its successful marketing campaigns. At Budget Branders, we know that the average deli or sandwich shop isn’t necessarily going to be the next Subway. But with our custom napkins, custom plastic cups, and custom foil sandwich bags, you can help to increase name recognition for your own restaurant for pennies on the dollar. Reach out today to talk to a member of our branding team.

All About Subway

Subway was founded in 1965 by a pair of friends in Connecticut. The restaurant started as “Pete’s Drive-In: Super Submarines” before being renamed Subway in 1968. Shortly thereafter, the first franchise operation opened in another town in Connecticut in 1974.Today, Subway is a global franchise with more than 37,000 locations around the world. While most of its restaurants are in the United States, it operates in more than 100 countries and territories. It is the largest restaurant operator in the world and the largest single-brand restaurant chain.

Subway’s main product is still the submarine sandwich or sub. It now has a number of other options, including breakfast sandwiches and wraps, pizzas, and salads. Its subs can be made in a number of different combinations, with patrons able to personalize their meal with their preferred type of bread, amount of cheese and meat, vegetables, sauces, and more.

Since the early 2000s, Subway has tried to distinguish itself from its competition as a fresher, healthier choice. That led to its slogan of “Eat Fresh,” with a focus on how its “Sandwich Artists” make meals out of freshly baked bread and fresh ingredients. Its signature green, white, and yellow logo is instantly recognizable.

This marketing strategy led Subway to hire a spokesperson, Jared Fogle, who had lost over 200 pounds in part due to eating Subway. While the strategy was successful, it ultimately backfired when Fogle was convicted of multiple crimes. However, Subway was able to pivot and continue marketing its fresh ingredients as a core feature of the brand.

While its sales have dropped in recent years due to competition from fast-casual chains like Chipotle, Subway remains a staple in cities and towns across America. It has weathered many storms – including claims about the actual freshness of its ingredients – and continued to thrive as a corporation.
