The United States is facing an unprecedented emergency, the likes of which this country has never faced before. In a matter of weeks life as we knew it came to a near halt. Schools closed, entire businesses were shut down, and travel had been restricted. One of the first industries hit by the pandemic was the restaurant industry and it’s an industry that faces a very uncertain future.
Prior to the pandemic, there were over 1 million restaurants in the US that employed roughly 15.3 million Americans. Due to the pandemic, it’s estimated that 3% of all US restaurants have been forced to permanently close and an additional 11% will likely have to permanently close within the next 30 days. Since March 1st, the restaurant industry has lost more than 3 million jobs; leaving many without a means to support themselves and their families.
As a restaurant supplier, Budget Branders has witnessed the impact that COVID-19 has had on restaurants first-hand. We’ve seen some of our favorite restaurants close down, and we’ve witnessed those laid off in the aftermath struggle to recover. We want to do everything in our power to help both restaurants and restaurant industry workers survive COVID-19, which is why we’re partnering with World Central Kitchen.
About World Central Kitchen & Their COVID-19 Efforts
World Central Kitchen (WCK) is a nonprofit organization founded by Chef Jose Andres in 2010. The initial goal was to heal and strengthen communities through food by delivering chef prepared meals to those in need. World Central Kitchen has grown immensely over the last 10 years and is now a strong global initiative. Last year alone, the foundation supported communities impacted by 13 unique major disasters.
World Central Kitchen is now operating a COVID-19 food relief program. The organization is working hard to supply Americans in need with fresh meals. WCK is also in the process of integrating restaurants and meal delivery companies into their program so that restaurants can get back to work operating for a cause. Food is such an incredible force for good. Food is nourishing and restorative, but its benefits extend far beyond filling a basic need for energy. Food invokes powerful emotions, brings people together, and can often be associated with unforgettable memories. At Budget Branders, we believe in the power of food. It’s the reason we were drawn to serving the restaurant industry and it’s the reason we are drawn to supporting World Central Kitchen.
